THIS IS NOT FAKE NEWS!!!
Brent and Dan will participate in this year's Mongol Rally.
About 300 teams will travel 13000-20000km by very small and very inadequate vehicles from The U.K. to Mongolia to raise money for charity.
There is no set route, it is not a race and participants are completely on their own relying on road side ingenuity, generosity of strangers and a good amount of luck.
An expected 50 teams will not finish due to mechanical failures, incorrect visas, food poisoning, imprisonment or any other good reason.
We expect to experience humility, ignorance, various levels of failure and hopefully redemption.
Teams are taking a wide variety of routes due to budgets, free time, visa constraints and preference. They will encounter corrupt border crossings and police officers as well as many sincere and generous individuals who are actually excited to to meet and help strangers.
Brent and Dan are in the process of acquiring a 2001 Toyota Yaris with a 998 cc engine. This car participated in the Mongol Rally in 2016 but never made it to Mongolia due to some level of misunderstanding or border corruption that justifiably caused many teams to turn back or head on alternate adventures.
This car will be about half as powerful as the smallest cars that are available in North America. It does not have A/C or cruise but should be great on gas. The car is right hand steer which is the wrong hand steer for every country of the rally after the leaving the U.K.
Some of the challenges so far:
- Buying a car across the pond unseen.
- registering and Insuring said vehicle
- Sorting out and applying for visas
We will be raising money for Cool Earth, the official charity of the rally and Plan International
Cool Earth works alongside indigenous villages to halt rainforest destruction. Local people stand to lose the most from deforestation but the most to gain from its protection, that’s why they are the forest’s best possible custodians. All Cool Earth partnerships are community-owned and led. By developing local livelihoods, their mission is to end the cycle of deforestation entrenching villages into further poverty. Creating strong, self-determining communities. Not only that but 90% of your donation goes straight to the rainforest and their indigenous partners.
Not for profit, independent and inclusive of all faiths and cultures, we have only one agenda: to improve the lives of children Plan is a global movement for change, mobilizing millions of people around the world to support social justice for children in developing countries. Plan works in 70 countries around the globe, including 51 developing countries across Africa, Asia and the Americas. We give children, families and communities the tools they need to break the cycle of poverty and begin the cycle of progress by creating sustainable solutions for improving their own lives.
