David

I started in July 2015 and trained with Alex Anderson at FootFlight paramotors and earned my APPI PPG Pilot rating on 26/1/16. Since then I have clocked up over 110 hours of local training and XC flight. I was on the PPG tour of Malaysia in 2017 and have also flown in Spain, Poland and France on privately arranged trips and public events such as Las Candelas, Mondial Air Paramoteur and Columbus Wind Festival.
I am on the last stage of the BHPA Alternative Entry Scheme and have completed the skills flying assessment and study for the final exam. I believe this, my previous APPI study and completing hours of XC in the UK and other countries has given me a good education in the aspects of meteorology relevant to my flying interests.
With regard to emergency landing procedures, I have answered from the perspective of a controlled emergency landing in event of an engine/equipment failure or due to degraded weather conditions rather than a wing failure leading to deployment of reserve parachute (which I always fly with.) One of my primary concerns at all times when flying is to have at least one potential landing site in view adjusting course or altitude to make this possible. UK air law has specific stipulations for flying in the vicinity of populated areas which form part of my approach to choosing emergency landing sites. Evaluation of potential sites considers obstacles at height, obstacles on the ground (structures and animals), terrain, possible risk to 3rd parties and ease of recovery. On an XC flight I constantly monitor my ground speed via GPS and use this combined with knowledge of my wing to understand wind speed and direction which forms part of planning an emergency landing approach.
