WMUK is the UK charity providing support for Waldenström patients and their carers. Waldenström’s Macroglobulinaemia (WM) is a rarer blood cancer of white cells produced in the bone marrow and which becomes more common with age. Currently incurable but it is treatable WMUK not only provides individual support but sponsors research and lobbies for the availability of new treatments on the NHS, several of which are likely to greatly extend the life expectancy of patients in the near future. Unusually, it is a partnership between patients and expert doctors working towards a cure and all work is undertaken by unpaid volunteers, so all donations go towards support and research projects. Current projects include the Rory Morrison Cancer Registry which gathers together treatment results throughout the UK to research the best treatment methods, sponsoring research at Leeds University on the DNA of WM and the collection of patient DNA samples for analysis in a biobank at University College Hospital London. WMUK also hold regular doctor-patient meeting throughout the country. “A few years ago my mother was diagnosed with Waldenström’s Macroglobulinemia (WM) and WMUK helped hugely in our efforts, especially my mother’s, to get to grips with and understand this illness. It will no doubt also be of great support again when the condition worsens. Its work towards a cure and funding for this rare disease and is of great significance to everyone affected by WM.” Hugo Scott, Genghis Kart Team Member
