We're here! Wot no Bajai...
Bali, Indonesia
Train, becak then ferry and finally we're onto Bali!
Probolinggo, Indonesia
We've tried a Bajai, truck, plane, car and now it's time for a train in our quest to get to Bali. We're doing better than our Bajai truck which is still in Sumatra...This morning's 0230 reveille was worth it to slog up a mountain for the spectacular views of cloud and fog and the torrential rain...
, Mount Bromo, Sukapura 67254, Indonesia
Stunning drive into Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. Bajai would never have made it! Eating an early dinner in a mountain lodge ready for a 3am walk to watch sunrise over Gunung Bromo.
Surabaya, Indonesia
Leapfrogged across to East Java to get back on schedule. Road trip definitely restarts tomorrow... Well as 'definitely' as anything has been so far on this trip...
Batam, Indonesia
Chasing our Bajai truck to Java via plane.
Padang, Indonesia
Good news: our Bajai is en route to Bali. Bad news: we are not with it. A combination of delayed starts, ridiculous roads, unreliable engines and unfamiliar mechanics meant every team has come to the conclusion it was a complete impossibility to reach the finish in time. We were planning on a ferry to Java from Padang to make up time, but the ship is stuck elsewhere in Indonesia. The state of emergency in Jakarta complicates matters further. So since this morning every Bajai bar one is on a truck which will only just reach the finish in time. However, our pan-Indonesian road trip is not over! We are now working on flying to Surabaya to drive Eastern Java and into Bali, where we hope to be reunited with our Bajai, hopefully to drive the final leg.@
Padang, Indonesia
Took all day to find a replacement front tyre (of course the spare doesn't fit!) so resigned ourselves to another night in Padang, and retired to the hotel for drinks in the pool. Only way to get to Bali on time is by truck/ boat/ plane but we're not giving up on the road just yet.@
Padang, Indonesia
Drove to Bagile, a race against time to meet up with Rags to Rickshaws for their truck to Padang. Epic 18hrs. Arrived 0500. Our arses and shaws may never be the same again. Big thank you to the boys for the lift.
Parapat, Indonesia
After a morning waiting for a mechanic, we had an awesome run to Lake Toba. Hills survived: many. Monkeys seen: plenty. Breakdowns and rescues: nil! Ssshhhh don't tell the other teams...
