It’s primary purpose is to raise money for charities in Mongolia in a way that is fun, unique, and adventurous. Teams participating in the Rally have agreed to raise a minimum of £1000 for the official event charities.
The Rally has been called the “greatest adventure in the world” and is organized by the League of Adventurists International Limited, a private company registered in the UK. The principal launch is from London with other starting points in Spain and Italy. The Rally is designed as an adventure rather than a traditional rally race. There is no set route, and no support from the organizers along the way, No awards are given for the first place finisher; the overall goal is to just complete the 8-10,000 mile journey from the start to Ulaanbaatar. Most teams complete the journey in three to four weeks.

Vehicles used in the rally must have an engine displacement of less than 1,200cc and must be newer than 2001 (as per the Mongolian Government, for import reasons). Vehicles with larger displacements can be used in exchange for increased charity fundraising and exceptions to the rule are considered for vehicles of “notable unusualness or high comedic value”. Ambulances, fire engines, and other vehicles that are of high use to Mongolian charities are also considered. Upon reaching Mongolia, vehicles are either donated to charity or auctioned off and the proceeds are donated to the charities.

No support or accommodations are made for teams participating in the rally. Traveling in vehicles ill-equipped for 10,000 miles across mountains, desert, and frozen tundra will lead to a much richer experience along the way as we’ll need to rely on locals for help, directions, repairs and hospitality.

The inaugural rally took place in 2004. 6 teams started and 4 completed the journey. The 2006 Rally began on July 22 with 167 cars. 117 teams successfully completed the trip. In 2009, 359 teams started the Mongol Rally, and approximately 281 made it to Ulaanbaatar.

What happens to us between the start, the deserts, mountains, bandits and wilderness is anyone’s guess. If nothing goes wrong, then something definitely has gone wrong. We have no support and no guarantee of arrival at the finish line. Nor do we have guarantee of safety, but of course, that is what makes it an adventure.
