Hardcore day, decided to take the coast rd in Sumartra today at the last min, thought if we do go out at least it will be a glorious failure. Got stuck up second mountain all the locals helped and got us going again. Last hour was driving through the dark in the Jungle. Found a Surf lodge to stay in so sorted for tonight. Lets see what tomorrow brings!!!

Where to start? In kalianda, 30kms into Sumatraafter only 160 kms today. Crankshaft broke again in Serang (after the sole day's highlight of a Mcdonalds drive thru) but managed to find a motorbike showroom and their mechanic welded back on. Got through the last awful dusty bit of Java and onto the Merak ferry. But couldnt get up the hill out of the port (I had to jump out and run alongside). Then about another 10kms on we encountered a large lorry on our side of the road, a quick pothole excursion later and our drivetrain was split in two - no motion whatsoever. Pulled up into the nearest building (the local mayor's office), found a mechanic but thought it was all over for the race. Somehow fixed it but then another 5kms on our exhaust fell off. Tied it back on and found the nearest town and hotel. It's nice and on the beach but our attempts to buy beer ended in ** some text is missing **

What would you say if someone said to you:
“Do you want to drive more than 3,000km through Indonesian jungle, volcanoes and bad roads in an entirely impractical and breakdown prone vehicle with no assistance and no set route in order to raise money for charity?”

I said “Yes”
This means in October Lukas and I will be driving from Bali to Sumatra in an auto-rickshaw/tuk-tuk/bajaj as part of the Rickshaw Run to raise at least GBP10,000 / US$15,000 for the Henry Surtees Foundation and Birdlife International charities.
We’re paying personally for all the associated costs and good old Google will giftmatch up to US$6000 of what I raise.

Please help support chosen charities by donating to our page for Henry Surtees Foundation (our choice) or the page for Birdlife (the official race charity).

So after months of emailing, thinking, lots of drinking and talking James and I have started to do some organising. Team name sussed, bag bought, the Danglers are ready to go! So why does it feel like we are stood at the edge of the empire state building ready to jump holding a pair of balloons!
