Rajasthan, India
Jodhpur - Jaisalmer. Final leg.
Rajasthan, India
Just picked up 'Chopra', a goatherder from just outside Ajmer and giving him a lift to the Pushkar. Commemorated this with a drive through at McDonalds in the 'shaw. Classy.
Rajasthan, India
Made it to the Pink City, Jaipur as tastefully reflected by the severe case of 'tukkers tan' amongst the team. Elephant ride up to the Amber Fort in the afternoon and beers with 'Ken-tuki 3' 'Spice is Right' and 'Our Delhi Bread' this evening.@
Uttar Pradesh, India
Pulled over by a murder investigation squad whilst chugging down the NH2.... turns out they fancied a cup of tea. Taj Mahal in the afternoon - photos don't do it justice.
Uttar Pradesh, India
Just because 1.3 billion people aren't confused enough by tourists in a brightly painted tuktuk, we've affixed the universally known label 'TAXI' to the front. Inappropriate? Perhaps. Hilarious? Certainly.
Uttar Pradesh, India
Missing - a left footed white havaina. Last seen cartwheeling down the NH 2 just past Dhobi. Presumed eaten by cow. Right foot given tasteful Gangean funeral ceremony. Rickshaw serviced, final slog for Jaisalmer begins tomorrow.@
Uttar Pradesh, India
In Varanasi heading down to the Ganges to watch the funeral processions this evening. Monsoon like deluges all day - tuk is utterly useless for protection from the elements...
Bihar, India
Made it to the home of Buddhism - sadly the only 'en-lightenment' I've achieved today is from the long overdue gratuitous bout of Delhi belly...
Bihar, India
Seemed to be mistaken for Manmohan Singh and his cabinet ministers at toll booths on the National Highways as we storm through Bihar. Thanks Indian National Congress/deliriously happy motorway staff for the exemptions. Cashback.
Ill-prepared. The one word I'd use to sum up my approach to this adventure. Given that training has proved fairly impossible due to the lack of a local Rickshaw school in Rotherhithe (there's a fairly niche market), preparations have taken the form of.... well, they haven't. I've bought gaffe tape and bungees and a couple of pairs of 'conservatively' coloured board shorts. What more is needed?
The Rickshaw Run - How could I turn down such an offer?!
With only a couple of weeks spare before I start a new job at home I could not have anticipated a better way to spend this time than risking life and limb in the name of charity and adventure!
I guess I've been lucky enough to see a rather diverse array of places, people and cultures across the world even until now being only in my early twenties.
Over the past years I've spread my wings from the UK, across to our neighbours on the European continent. I've journeyed on rickety buses through South America, ridden motorbikes through South East Asia, endured 'retro' campers through Australia, taken buses through NZ and crammed in to packed cars in the US of A. All of these journeys have offered their own fascinating adventures along the way that every one should have a chance to experience.
With a daunting but infinitesimally exciting episode waiting to be written, India will surely be tremendously memorable. For what, I can as yet only begin to imagine, as the Tukkenham Hotspurs set off with only 7 horsepower between them and the open road!
Shubh Kaamnaayein (Good Luck!) Tukkenham Hotspurs!
