Rugby Tackling Life & Balika Mandiram
Rugby Tackling Life in Uganda: This is more than just a rugby club, thought Julia as she sat cross legged, on the dust covered ground, amongst members the Ugandan community. A single calculator and notebook shared between the group. Listening eagerly as they discussed child marriage, teenage pregnancy and the high school dropout rate - espescially amongst women. In a society where 53% of children complete primary education, 41% of people live on less than $1.90/day and almost half of Uganda’s population is under the age of 15 - many teenage girls often find themselves in vulnerable positions leading them to make choices that put them at a disadvantage for the rest of their lives. Through the power of sport, RTL empowers women and girls in Uganda by creating opportunities through Rugby. Allowing them to make informed decisions that impact positively on their lives and enrich their communities.RTL strives to educate players on issues such as sexual and reproductive rights, menstrual hygiene and encourages both boys and girls to complete their education. Balika Mandiram in India: The Marthoma Church started with a social commitment : to provide shelter, education, and other essential services to girls who may be orphaned, abandoned, or facing difficult circumstances. Balika Mandiram, plays a crucial role in supporting vulnerable girls and empowering them to lead independent and fulfilling lives. By providing safe accommodation, education, nutrition, healthcare, counseling and vocational training. In 2024, they saw 10 women finish the 12th grade and are now being supported to go on and achieve a bachelors Education in Nursing, Computer Engineering, Dental Care, Ayurvedic Medicine and more. The Church currently has sponsorhip for 7 of the women. The funds we raise on this journey through India will be going toward furthering the education for the remaining 3 women.
