Hello Ulaan Baatar!
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Hello Ulaan Baatar!
, Altai Mountains
We've made it to Altai and Suzie is still going strong, although Ghengis Khanny State and The Mechanical Engineers who we're convoying with are now at the garage for a spot of welding and suspension repairs (fiesta and Skoda) our other convoy team, Mongol Madness, fellow Swifts, are still going strong too. Suzuki swift - we love you.
Khovd, Mongolia
13 Aug - I've driven through 4 rivers, over 3 mountain passes, including one with snow, met an eagle hunter with his hunting eagle, had goats, sheep, cows and camels blocking the way and had only 50metres of tarmac to drive on all day! That childhood tractor driving practise has finally come in very useful!
Bayan Olgii, Mongolia
We're finally driving across the vast open plains of beautiful, friendly Mongolia after a 46 hour fiasco at the border waiting for our importation money to be transferred! It was very, very cold and pouring with rain. Out lowest point of the trip. But the thought of all the money you have all donated to our charities got us through. Only 1000 more miles to go!!!
Kosh-Agach, Russia
A sociable camping night with 3 other teams by a river about 200km from the Mongolian border. It's good to finally meet up with some other teams and swap stories. It's pretty chilly tonight so have sleeping bag and blanket (thanks Kerry's class). This far eastern part of Russia is all forests and rivers, very green and lush with corn fields and more sunflower fields. Such a change from barren, flat Kazakhstan.
Biysk, Russia
just joined 5 rally teams- we're all heading for our last border crossing 700km away. A quick visit to a Russian supermarket to stock up and then drive, drive, drive for Mongolia!
Barnaul, Russia
We made it through with no problems, phew! Another random lakeside camping spot tonight about 200km from Barnaul, Russia.
Aul, Kazakhstan
We're at the Russian border! Wish us luck with this one!!
, Sasykkol, Kazakhstan
I'm sure there is a Lake Sasykkol but we couldn't find it so we camped where we thought it should be! Whizzing through Kazakstan at the rate of knots, so far pretty uninspiring landscape after Kyrg and Tajik. Fingers crossed we get to see some camels before we leave.
Almaty, Kazakhstan
Another interesting border crossing yesterday - they're definitely not our strong point!! I fainted at passport control in front of a massive queue of people to be brought round by Gemmie, a passport control man and helpful Kazak lady hovering over me with Iced tea. I had been feeling a bit dicey this morning and dosed up on immodium and dioralyte, but wasn't expecting that! So we checked into air con, hot shower, clean white sheets, expensive hotel so I could try to sleep off whatever it was ready for today! No time to be ill, we have a deadline to keep to...
