Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

Arrived in UB 60 hours later taking what would have been our planned route. Bus overflowing with passagers, luggage + cargo - every man for himself. Frequent stops - 7 breakdowns, 2-hour breaks for both lunch + supper, for fermented mare's milk, smokes + calls of nature. However...glorious spontanous singing through the night. Gratefully met by our host, Sara, in UB at 2.30am! Gut-wrenchingly handed over the keys at the finishing line the following day. The Mini will be repaired + auctioned in UB. A huge thank you to all those who have supported us + we will be giving an update on the Mongolian deaf project.

Bayan Olgii, Mongolia

Arrived in Mongolia on 13th with the snow. Due to the endless Mongolian border bureacracy, we had a need to use the facilities. We had to bear all in a long-drop freezing shed! After their lunch break, we were released into the magnificant wild. After initially embarking on the wrong road, we found the main mud road. So imagine our horror when we saw the track leading up a mountain. Three-quarters of the way up, our beloved Mini could take no more. We we were towed to Olgii. 2 days with mechanics - no joy as need an unavailable spare part. Now in one hour, we are taking a bus, a one thousand-plus miles journey to Ulan Bataar - approx 55 bumpy hours. Hope the driver knows the way better than we did! We feel bereft at leaving the Mini behind and we are feeling totally deflated. She will be taken to Ulan Bataar at a later date to be repaired + auctioned for charity. Of course, we have the wedding gnomes with us.

Dzhalal-Abadskaya, Kyrgyzstan

After bureaucratic chaos, we are finally in Kyrgyzstan. Managed to get caught in the slow down due to the celebrations of end of Ramandan + Independance Day! Beloved Mini in tip-top condition post thorough service in Tashkent, but still no PAS! Wish we learnt Russian before we came here - everything is now in Cyrillic script. There are at last road signs, but we don't understand them! We are staying in a collapsing Soviet hotel with perilous balconies, no water and dire service, but it's clean + cheap!

Köneürgench, Turkmenistan

14 hrs Caspien crossing - 36 hrs in total including bureaucratic immigration nightmare! Telephone blocked. Roads unbelieveable - craters + corrugations. Traffic cops everywhere. Problems with power assisted steering. Hardly any road signs. Ashgabat - dictator's self-agrandised white marbled city admidst the country's poverty. Arrived in Konye Urgench on 19 August.
