Varan- who?
Varngians - the Viking lifeguard of the emperor of the Byzantine empire - sounds like something out of Game of Thrones right? But their existence is a historical fact. And so this summer we, two of their Norwegian descendants (at least we feel we are,) embark on the voyage of a lifetime. From the western coast of Norway, the heartland of the seafaring Vikings, via Sweden, Denmark, England and most of Europe, we will drive to Miklagard/Konstantiople/Istanbul and beyond. Far beyond. We're investigating some rumours about a warrior people in the easternmost corner of the known world, Mongolia. Armed with wrenches, screwdrivers and berserker attitude, we will sail our four-wheeled ship as far east as it will take us..
"We" are Olav Vik and Vendel Hausken, a couple who one year ago thougt the Mongol Rally seemed a good idea. We still think it is, but ask us again in six weeks time... The Mongol Rally is a charity racing event, of which the purpose is to raise money for Cool Earth, whilst driving the shittiest car possible from England to Mongolia.
For norwegians: [https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Væring](http://https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Væring)
Engaging in trade, piracy, and mercenary activities, Varangians roamed the river systems and portages of Gardariki, as the areas north of the Black Sea were known in the Norse sagas. This summer, two of the Varnangians descendants will once again roam the eastern riches.
