Cool Earth
Cool Earth is an organization that strives to mitigate climate change by maintaining the Amazon rainforest. To accomplish this goal, they provide economic resources to local peoples in the region who would otherwise turn to deforestation for their livelihood. On top of reducing the world's carbon emissions, this project has the added benefit of significantly improving the well-being of people in these communities. According to Giving What We Can, founded by William MacAskill of 'effective altruism' fame, "Cool Earth is the most cost-effective charity we have identified to date which works on mitigating climate change through direct action". Conservatively, they estimate that Cool Earth is able to reduce 1 metric ton of CO2 emissions for every $1.34 donated (estimates as of 2016).
