Day 1? Or 3? How long have we be gone now?

After departing Zanzibar at 5am, swimming out to the boats through a pretty hectic breakwater, we finally arrived at Pemba at 1030 after a pretty rough crossing - though the ngalawas coming the other way looked to be having a slightly easier time of it.

We spent the morning mostly brain dead, and finally went into town to do some last minute shopping for food and other essentials. Chake-Chake was an adventure in itself, and we found most of what we needed, including a local SIM card - that then proved not to work in the Nokia we had brought for the purpose, so our final iPhone must remain at risk. D'oh!

We then headed back to the beach in a crowded communal taxi with 16 people squeezed into and onto it. When we got back, we began the work of choosing our boat and getting it shipshape, including re doing most of the lashings, replacing the sail, and getting it back on the water.

Of course, our luck continues, and on anchoring out in the bay we found that it was sinking fast! So in the rapidly falling darkness, I towed it back in to shore and bailed her out. We're now hoping a local blacksmith/carpenter (a 'fundi') will be able to stopper lost of the leaks before our first sail training in the afternoon.

Another early start to get all that sorted then, and as we are camping tomorrow night this may be the last update until NYE, but you should be able to follow us on the tracker location from tomorrow afternoon.

Oh, and we reckon we did a pretty good job on our sail - check the pic.

In other news, tons bag is now in Dar, so we may see it again after all!

Much love, and thanks again for all the support. Rory Tom and Alex.

So..

... We are on the wrong island (Zanzibar) on the wrong day, having caught the wrong flight to the wrong country. Oh, and toms bag never made it out of Heathrow and might not join us til NYE, if ever. On the other hand, we've got beers, food, and a local to show so where to camp. So many stories and we haven't even got to the start line yet!

Ethiopian False Start

So after everything going swimmingly so far, we have been told that our flight to Dar is delayed by three hours... Unfortunately this will also lead to us missing out connection to Pemba, and we'll be stranded in Dar overnight.

Currently trying to persuade the charter flight company to hold our Pemba flight for us, but can't see them holding a whole plane just for 6 people, no matter how small!

A rather frustrated Rory, Alex and Tom.

Alexander Nimmo

Quit your job and burn the tie to do something incredible. Did the Mongol Rally in 2008 and this seems like a logical follow up.

Rory

With a nice early mid-life crisis setting in, and already owning a red sports car, (albeit a rusty Celica on its last legs), clearly the idea of sailing round the Indian Ocean on a log powered by a bed sheet is the next best idea!

Tom

Give me enough rum and I will say yes to anything. Give me too much rum and I will say yes to everything. I wish Alex and Rory didn't know that.

The Zanzibarmy Army (aka The Inglorious Zanzibasterds) consists of Alex 'Captain' Nimmo, Rory 'The Anchor' Naylon and Dr Tom 'Not the useful kind of Doctor' Lanyon-Hogg. The three met studying Chemistry at University, and have known each other ever since. Aside from a minor excursion of Alex and Rory driving to Mongolia in 2008 (Tom never made it out of central London), the three have led mostly uneventful and normal lives. Their main hobbies include crochet, rewatching episodes of Star Trek to find continuity errors, and deciding to do idiotic things like this while less than sober. They have many useful skills, however writing about themselves in the third person is clearly not one of them.
