camping by a lake, heading for Almaty for a rest and to fix the car up for the final push! Bit of a delay as the team we're convoying with put 5 litres of oil into their engine this morning and have spent the past hour removing their sump guard and draining it out!

Just at kazakstan border, 34 degrees, relatively cook compared to the 47 we had in turkmenistan! Hope to be through soon. Car still in one piece which is a bonus!

Just arrived with another team, had quick supper and off for a beer. The rear suspension fix is holding up despite shocking roads. Strange noises from front end which we'll investigate tomorrow

Mary, Turkmenistan
we've suffered our first mechanical setback, although down to human error. Decided to try to get to Mary in the dark. Noone told us how bad the roads are here! Hit a pothole hard doing 60mph and rear left shock absorber collapsed. Limped into Mary at midnight and had an interesting morning trying to find a mechanic to fix it. Turns out there are no Fords here and so had to repair rather than replace the shock....local mechanics are awesome! We need to get the car out of Turkmenistan in the next 3 days so hope it holds!@

seven hours at the border but we are finally in turkmenistan! Heading for Mary and then onto Uzbek border tomorrow.... Looking forward to a beer tonight!

phew... Our longest day yet, 14 hours in the saddle. Tic Tac is the star of the show so far, keeps on going when we are ready for beer and bed! Although not out of Iran yet so it's still alcohol free for us tonight! Hope for border tomorrow

phew! What a day, Iran border can be summed up in two words: confusing and expensive. Lots of bribes. Now camping in Tabriz with a Swiss team... On to Tehran tomorrow
