The NE is super - many Chinese-looking faces speaking bengalese and so friendly. We bunked up in a government Circuit House in Nongpoh for free! Oddly the magistrate had read a lot about NZ and the maori and wanted to do us a favor. And it beats driving the last(!) two hours to Shillong in the dark with no lights (battery died again yesterday so back to no horn or lights). Did some decent mileage through rather trafficless (strike day) roads AND when we stopped for lunch found that it was a hindu festival day and were showered with gifts and took tea and watched dancing in the owners home with the whole family. Good day!

India's potholed roads caused much rage today. Took at least an HOUR to drive our first 30km. Lost our horn when the battery fell out due to extreme rattle - the three of us were on the plastic whistles passing massive trucks from then on. Crossed the Ganges and were made to delete our photos of the river in case of terrorist threat??! Have arrived in Raiganj, sorted out battery issue and caught up with another kiwi team at our hotel. :) success
