Rider Chris Maude~ As far as equine events go “ The @mongolderby & Gaucho derby appeal to me most because I am a competitive person & I love to test myself. On top of that there is no better way to see the world than between the ears of a horse, I may grumble about them sometimes but I love the horses. • My favourite moment of the Gaucho Derby was DEFINITELY the view of Mnt. Fitz Roy after the most epic climb with a great crew of riders. After that, hum .... when it STOPPED snowing! • I miss trigger my giant grey horse from the race, terribly. • The Gaucho Derby will be more than epic, it will eclipse the Mongolian version. • Good luck to those that dare take it on & don’t fall into a false sense of security in those hills. • Trigger.... • • • Annie Aul~ “One of my favorite memories from the #gauchoderby was being stuck at vet station 2 with the crew and riders during The Snow Storm. While it was also miserable, the comradery between us all was pretty cool considering at this point we were still mostly just acquaintances. We simultaneously froze, then tried to warm up... check horses... repeat. We shared food (and a few sips from a bottle of whiskey) and played a horrible game of Go-Fish. Good times. • My favorite horse(s) were the first two I got for the start. “Chunky” and “Yellow” were saints. If our group hadn’t had the two of them as brave and guaranteed leads, we would’ve struggled much more than we did across some of that terrain! Having said that, I didn’t have a “bad” horse the whole time. I even hold a soft spot for my last horse, the precious gray that, bless his heart, couldn’t handle having anyone behind him on the ride. • As a rookie to anything “adventure racing” or even Endurance, I expected the riders with some experience (@mongolderby riders or endurance riders) to be a bit intimidating and hard-core. While those riders may have been better prepared in the way of equipment, they were phenomenal people and always open to help you out. Same for all of us rookies. Repost from @horsecanadamagazine ~ When Chris Peterson got the call informing him he had a spot in a 500-km race across the Patagonian wilderness in South America on horseback, he only had four months to prepare ‒ but he loves a challenge. • Having worked with beef cattle outfits off and on since he was a teenager, guided horseback trips in Wyoming and Banff where he had packed strings of four to eight horses and mules, worked as a farrier, and logged timber for a few years with draft horses in the East Kootenays of BC, he was also not afraid of hard work. In his ‘spare time’ he started colts for friends, enjoyed riding rodeo broncs, and competed in blacksmith contests on the weekends. • In preparation for the race he ran and hiked in the Rockies, figuring that he would need to be able to get off and walk to save his horses. He spent time sleeping outside in his race tent and sleeping bag; the weight limit of 85 kgs for riders meant that Chris, at 6’3.5, would have to race skinny and he wasn’t prepared to skimp on warmth to save weight.
